...what happened, exactly?

I got to know my fellow volunteers very well the first couple of days. One of them was a nurse, my age, Mao. If you ever run into her, you'll know her by her by the full body suit of tattoos she has. Been in this world ten years.

Anyway, Mao and I spent a lot of what free time we had together. We made it seem like we were having a whirlwind romantic fling... an excuse for us to be in each other's company as much as we were. Got a lot of rude comments for it too... so were at least some of the Malnosso buying it when it counted? I think so.

And naturally a couple is going to eventually want some time alone...

[Pause here for a sip of scotch.]

Naturally. [Nami shifts in her seat and swallows her discomfort on the subject. It's misplaced, anyway.] What did they do?

[Discomfort so noted, but Law gives no indication he registered it in the first place. Courtesy. Instead he trains his gaze on his drink.]

Mao and I both knew going into it that we were going to be caught. The Malnosso don't forbid volunteers from fraternizing, or even having a relationship on their own time... such as it is. No rules broken there. We weren't trying to escape. We didn't enter any restricted areas or wards... a closet wasn't worth more to them than a warning.

And honestly we didn't even make it far down the hall before they started closing. We made it seem we were too wrapped up in each other to notice. They for their part, gave us a few moments in the closet before they burst in. For that extra bit of humiliation.

We didn't touch or threaten them. They didn't touch her. For the most part they seemed somewhat glad someone had finally tried something. I suppose everyone had been too well behaved for their liking and they were itching to display a little authority. And disappointed that the misbehavior had only been a couple trying for a little privacy. So we got warned and humiliated... fully dressed down, and the Malnosso doctors and nurses joined in... since all the nastiest tasks started coming our way. There was a little less tension for the others, thankfully, after that. Some of the others were close to snapping.

[Before Zoro, there wouldn't have been any discomfort. But this subject reminds her of the way her Valley self used to steal moments away with the man she thought was her husband. Not a good memory. (Or a good one, but not hers.)

She frowns at the description of that treatment. Over the top.]

So unless you're incredibly creative, there's not much point trying anything on these missions.

[It's good to note. But it's also okay. Nami just wants the end benefits; ruling out this as a form of escape just makes her choices more simple.]

[Over the top, yes, but it was expected and it could have been so much worse. The Malnosso doctors and nurses were just being petty and that being yelled at and humiliated was bearable in the grand scheme of things. Nobody had wanted them there after all, and the volunteers were considered a burden on the best of days in an environment that was less than pleasant.]

Not right now, no. They're far too vigilant and I don't see them becoming complacent any time soon.

I can understand that. [It's a pity, but it makes good sense.] Thanks for letting me know.

[He sips his drink. Wonders if she is going to ask him the question that she addressed the network with earlier, or if she'll leave things as they are and excuse herself.

Either is possible; she clearly has a lot on her mind tonight. And he certainly has a better idea of where things lie on that front, though the picture certainly isn't perfect by any means.]

[She's tempted to ask him about the battledome now, actually; he works at the clinic there, after all. But that would be giving too much away, and she's not intending to make her intentions plain to anyone who didn't reply a certain way to her question.

So she smiles.] Guess I'll leave you to it, then. I might sign myself up for some of these.

[Excusing herself then. Aa. Alright.]

Have a good walk back. [Windy out today... but otherwise clear and pleasant. And perhaps by now the gusts have died down.] And if you do decide to go for it, I hope it works out.

[She stills on that last part-- definitely weighing things up there-- but in the end she just smiles as she stands. He has made her consider coming back to him later about this, though.]

Do you know if there's any way you can ...kind of shine or flash a light in somebody's head? Maybe if Hyt was involved... I don't know. I know it's a weird question.

And he remembers what Katara once told him.]

... Miss Sayo?

[It is quiet. He appears very deep in thought about this.]

[It doesn't surprise her that much. Sayo is well known in the village and word gets around.]

Yeah. She doesn't have that sort of ...medicine, I guess, where she comes from. But I thought at least if she's stuck here, then maybe there was a chance. [What with all the more modern medical types around here.]

[And here comes his professional medical opinion.]

Yes... I'm going to tentatively say yes.

You see, Miss Nami, there is some diagnostic equipment in the Dome that uses other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum for scanning, but to kill the parasite eating her memories... I believe it's going to take actual visible light. Brain tissue is quite dense, but not impermeable to something being shined through. It's just going to take more time to get all the tissues lit up.

And based on what's available here, I think Hyt would be the best option. Certainly the least invasive.

[He raises a hand though.]

I'm going to want to consult with Miss Raine, though, if Miss Sayo consents to having this done. I know she's been responsible for a lot of Miss Sayo's care in the past. As well, if this is done, there's several things that will be needed. As much information on the nature of the parasite in her mind - I'm concerned it might not go quietly if I try to kill it, and I don't know what that would mean for her. I have a pact with Hyt, and I'll preform the procedure, but I need at least another medical practitioner present to monitor Miss Sayo while this is being done.

That and a way to confirm the thing is dead. I don't know if my instruments will pick up the parasite to begin with. [It is a mushi. Does a mushi show on a MRI scan?] So if there's a person in the village who can tell, it would be helpful.

[Nami's face goes through a range of expressions as Law speaks-- from hopeful to slightly confused yet understanding, worry, a faint cringe at the talk of parasites, and finally a faint and measuring look as she considers that last part.]

Katara might be able to help. She's dealt with...things wrong that aren't visible before this. [She might not be able to detect a mushi, but then again there's no harm in checking.]

I haven't discussed this with Sayo yet. I didn't want to get her hopes up.

Katara would be my first choice, yes. [... he considers a few moments more.] If she can't, I think of one more person to ask, but I'd prefer Katara.

I understand. If she consents, I'll get things rolling on my end. [He'll have a lot of hard questions to ask of Miss Raine. He has no idea if Miss Sayo's body has grown dependent on all the extra energy the mushi supplies her with.]

Would you let me know what she decides, either way?

[Nami relaxes a little, giving him a smile.] I will. I'll talk to her and let you know.

No problem. [Huuuuh... almost through this bottle already. Pity, pity. He guesses he does like it.
