I'm not sure. He had a hat... but I -- don't know what it was made of. [ He pauses, thinking back. ] He wanted me to get his staff back from you. But... he never said why you -- ah... took it.

[A hat...? That doesn't ring any bells, but the moment Minato mentions 'his staff' she stiffens. Still, she's not worried; Minato is being very polite. She's a little irritated, but she'd been expecting something of the sort.]

...I didn't take it. I built it. [She keeps her voice neutral as she pulls out a chair, sitting down to face Minato.] The guy you spoke to is called Arlong. He hates humans, and he hates me most of all. The staff in question is what protects me.

Arlong... [ Minato repeats the name thoughtfully, mulling it over before he nods. ]

Ah, yeah -- I gathered. His, um... hatred of humans, I mean. But -- I see. ... what -- is he? If... you don't mind my asking, that is.

I don't mind. He's a fishman. My world has a few different species in it; fishmen are one of them. They have a... really bad relationship with humans. [Some of it is warranted. She blinks at Minato.] Did you believe him?

About -- the staff..? [ Minato shrugs. It was a situation wherein he had incomplete information and so simply had to go with what he was told so far. He seems to believe Nami, at least. ]

[...she smiles faintly after a moment.] It's easy enough to doublecheck, if you wanted. There are people who've seen me with the staff well before Arlong arrived. And if you ask him how it works, he wouldn't be able to tell you. I appreciate you coming to ask, though.

[ He nods. ] I see... And -- he... wasn't very thorough in his explaining. I ... wanted to, ah... know the truth. Thank you for telling me...

No problem. [She lifts an eyebrow wryly.] Does that mean I get to keep my staff?

[fools_journey]

I'm not... a thief. [ He lifts an eyebrow right back. ] ... but what -- does the staff do?

[mikangirl]

It makes weather! [She hooks one piece of the staff out of her shirt. ...just don't ask where she was keeping that, okay.] Rain, wind. Thunder. It's capable of levelling a building. I'd show you, but we just fixed the bar.

How..? Is it -- magic? [ He doesn't ask where it was. Honestly? He's just impressed at her ability to keep things in her shirt! ]

Carefully calculated chemistry, actually. The world I come from has an entire island in the sky dedicated to the up close study of weather-- I studied there for two years. I have a really fine sense of the weather myself, so really I'm just playing with different levels of heat and cold to generate a weather pattern I like.

[Among other things, but that's layman's terms.]

But... how does it -- ah... change the heat levels?

One Piece physics are ...interesting.

Generation of heat... [How best to explain. She's already learned that what passes for tech at home is often called magic elsewhere.] Each section of my staff has its own properties that I can combine. This one's the cold one. [She holds the staff section up to show that it's not solid.] The staff itself is hollow. It's...bubble technology, for want of a better word. Here.

[And with a quick shake, a bubble forms at the end of the staff section, before wafting up toward the ceiling. Nami reaches up with a fingernail and pops it, sending a rush of frigid air across the table, just strong enough to ruffle Minato's bangs.]

Heat works the same way. A large introduction of hot or cold air in an area, combine it with wind or moisture, and you can get a lot of effects if you know how pressure systems work.

[ And lo, his bangs are ruffled. Minato gazes at the place where the bubble was for several seconds before looking back to the staff. ]

That seems... really useful. I can see why someone else'd want it...

It packs a good punch in the right hands. Arlong wouldn't begin to know how to use it. [She tucks the section away again.] But he's strong and powerful in other ways, and he doesn't like me very much. Take the staff away and he gets a free shot at me. That's all it comes down to.

[ And it disappears like magic! Her shirt has endless storage space, it seems! ]

Mm. ... does he like anyone?

[mikangirl]

[Nami packs a dimensional portal in there somewhere.]

He gets along with people that aren't human. And people he can buy. That's about it.

Oh... Is there any particular reason? Or is he just... that way? ... and does -- he attack people... often?

[mikangirl]

[Nami sighs. It'd be easier to give one side of the story, but she knows better. For Keimi's sake, she'll be fair.]

Arlong comes from a race that's heavily persecuted where we come from. He's probably grown up with a lot of hatred from humans. He's never had a good word to say about any of them as long as I've known him.

Here, I don't think he'll attack unless someone antagonises him. On the other hand, he's incredibly easy to antagonise.

I see... Why are the um... fishmen persecuted? Is there... no way to -- convince him to get along?

I don't think so. The only humans he's ever gotten along with are those he can buy. If you try to be nice to him, he'll just call you a coward and beneath his notice, and if you talk back you're just another piece of scum.

...they're persecuted because they're different. That's all. They don't look human, so they're beneath humans. That's how some people think, anyway.

I see... I um... have found that - ah... being polite... doesn't -- help much.

It's --... It's a shame that ... people are cruel about the um... differences. We're all living beings.

Agreed. Though it doesn't excuse a lot of what he's done. He's the sort of man to take a prejudice against his kind and turn it into an excuse to kill innocent people. It only makes things worse.
