[Nami for her own part is content to either stay with her mother or go out exploring with Sanji for the first day or two she's home. It's bitterly cold out there and she doesn't like it much at all-- it's nothing like Cocoyashi-- and her feet are a little red from early barefoot adventures in the snow, but luckily she doesn't catch cold. She's more grounded and less restless than Sanji is, because Bellemere is here. And that means she can let Bellemere take care of things. Because after all, didn't mama say that they wouldn't be here for very long? She misses Nojiko, but if it's only for a little while, then maybe she'll just treat this as a holiday.

Then the second night passes, and Nami turns 10. And everything changes.]

[She's had nightmares before. And the last night was unsettling with the dreams she had, but they weren't bad dreams-- just ones that feel like she's lived a lifetime in one night. Or...one year, as the case may be.

The second night, she wakes up with a wail (muffled brutally by shoving the blanket up to her mouth, because nobody likes a crying human) and tears and her arm hurts but mostly all she can remember right now is Bellemere and the screams when they stepped on her arm and the blood and the way Arlong just shot her down--

die for your pathetic love--

--and everything that followed. And she knows why her arm hurts, but that doesn't make any sense, and Bellemere is right upstairs and Nami just spends the next ten minutes crying into the blanket and not daring to look at her arm. And when she can separate dream from reality just enough, she slides out of bed and doesn't even bother to dress properly, running for the stairs to the next floor in an oversized tshirt that hangs off her arms and going straight for her mama's bedroom.

She eventually falls asleep again and further returning memories distance her from the shock of that death, but none of them are good memories. And now she's confused to boot, because sometimes when she closes her eyes she expects to open them somewhere else entirely. And Nami grows to like the cold, because as long as there's snow outside, it means she's not at Arlong Park, and that means that maybe she can put it all aside as an especially bad nightmare and it didn't really happen. Because it didn't. Because Bellemere is here.

Anyway, distracting herself from darker thoughts is a damn good idea, really. Best to try and not think about it and just...stick with Bellemere a lot today.]

[So in the afternoon, Luceti, there is a little girl staring back at you from the journals. And doing the most awesomely intelligent thing:

[Yeah. Because making faces at you all is really mature. She just wants to see how many people notice her, because damn this magical journal is fun.]

[Action]

[If people want to run into Nami at varying ages, she can be found:

-- At the library on Monday when she is 12, trying to reach that top shelf of navigation books;

-- At Good Spirits on Wednesday when she is 14, trying her luck at being served underage drinks (look, she can hold her liquor okay B|); and

-- Pretty much anywhere on the following Friday when she is 16, because she's smitten with a severe case of wanderlust; a rooftop, a shop, the forest, the battledome...anywhere. Chances are if you run into Nami today, she might attempt to pickpocket you just because she's got the suspicion she's damn good at it. And those ships out at sea hold her attention for a fair while, because...well, wouldn't it be nice to sail one away? These dreams, man.

For ages 17 and up, well... there'll be another post much later.  Just to avoid confusion.]

[Lot more wary at twelve than you were younger... it sets his heart at ease to know this. Have a kind smile.]

Which ones would you like?

[Sometimes being the height he is comes in handy.]
mikanchibi: (smiiile)

[personal profile] mikanchibi 2012-02-06 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
All of them, please. [She's very polite, though this is largely due to Law's appearance, standing back to give him room. She can't really read the titles properly from here, but she knows they're navigation books. His smile gets one of her own.] The books here are free, right?
deathsdoctor: (Pleasant | But it's alright)

[personal profile] deathsdoctor 2012-02-06 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. [He begins taking them off the shelf one at a time.] Yes they are. You can have as many as you like.
mikanchibi: (cheerful)

[personal profile] mikanchibi 2012-02-07 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay! I'm going to be here for a while, so I might as well learn everything I can.
deathsdoctor: (Curiousity | what's over there)

[personal profile] deathsdoctor 2012-02-08 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
[His arms are full of books halfway through the shelf so he's going to turn and put them on a table in an open and highly visible area (and therefore safer, he does not want her to feel cornered), and turn to grab the rest of them.

They've got a lot of books on navigation.]

Everything? [LOTTA BOOKS HERE.] Are you planning to become a guide when you grow up?

[Not all of these books are on sea navigation, after all, and well, guide... navigator... same family of occupations.]
mikanchibi: (stubborn)

[personal profile] mikanchibi 2012-02-08 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Uh uh. [She shakes her head vigorously.] I'm going to be a navigator and make a map of the world. And I'm not going to wait that long.

[That's a big dream. Big as becoming the World's Greatest Swordsman or finding One Piece or becoming Pirate King. What birthed it?

He wonders if it's because no one has done it before.]

[Nodding]
Big world out there, so I'd guess you'd have to tackle it as soon as you could. And it sounds like a lot of fun. I wouldn't wait either. All the new things you'd see.

[Well it would be the best part to him.]

[personal profile] mikanchibi 2012-02-09 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Mm! [She beams.] And it's not just East Blue! There's all the other Blues as well, and one day I'm going to go to the Grand Line and sail to all the islands! [It has yet to occur to Nami that some people here might not actually be from her own world.] It'll take a while, so as soon as I can leave, I'll start.
deathsdoctor: (Amused + Pleasant | what a nice day)

[personal profile] deathsdoctor 2012-02-11 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Bringing over the rest of the books to that table. Law has spotted an armchair a comfortable distance away by the library fireplace. That's where he plans to end up. In sight, but far enough away that she doesn't feel crowded.]

Aa. You'll need to gather a good crew for that. And a strong boat. Some of those waters can be very rough. [Wise nod.] But I don't see you having any trouble doing it.

Any place in particular you want to see?
mikanchibi: (uh. well.)

[personal profile] mikanchibi 2012-02-11 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
[She looks momentarily troubled by the idea of a good crew-- the crew she remembers is one she'd never sail with by choice and Nami might have been operating under the whole childish notion that she could sail the world by herself. But he makes a good point there; food for thought. Hmm.]

Well, I want to see everything. But I guess I'll start by going through all of East Blue, becuase a lot of the islands are really pretty. And maybe I'll go all the way north to see all the snow! But I don't know much about the Grand Line, yet.

[Her plans for world conquest are still kind of vague right now.]
deathsdoctor: (Neutral | Thoughtful)

[personal profile] deathsdoctor 2012-02-11 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's a good plan. [East Blue is the safest waters in all the seas.] There's a lot to see out there. Probably the best way to start exploring.

Grand Line? Mmm... now those are tricky waters. The islands are all jewels and interesting and strange in their own right... but you need to be careful out there. Regular compasses don't work there for one... you need something special called a Log Pose.

mikanchibi: (:o?)

[personal profile] mikanchibi 2012-02-11 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Log Pose...? [Compasses don't work...? But north is always north, isn't it? Her brow furrows as she considers this.]

How does a Log Pose work?
deathsdoctor: (Neutral + Wary | side glance)

[personal profile] deathsdoctor 2012-02-12 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well, a compass always points to a world's magnetic pole. True North... which isn't quite the North Pole, but very close. But in the Grand Line, each island has its own magnetic field. Some very strong, some weak, some that appear and disappear - all mixing together - and the compass gets all confused. It doesn't know where to point anymore - True North is masked by all the interference from everything else, see?

So a Log pose cuts through all the interference to lock onto a single island, so you can safely sail to that island. And once there, it will reset to lock onto the magnetic field of the next island. It takes a little while to reset... sometimes hours, mostly days, sometimes years. But that's how people thread their way through the Line. The Log Pose will choose a path and they'll sail it.
mikanchibi: (uh. well.)

Ohh. [Nami is nodding much like a little girl that's too young to understand such concepts. But she's just thinking it through. Hnn...she frowns.]

How do you go backward? I mean, if you decide you made a mistake, or you left something behind, or you just want to go back for a holiday, what do you do?
