[Nami's been MIA for a while, now. No big hassle-- close CR might know she went camping for various strange reasons. They may or may not involve a series of experiments and cruelty to various animals (it's all in the name of Science(TM)!!) and possibly cruelty to the odd wandering swordsman that happens to cross her path.
She's found out some interesting things. Although admittedly, they're likely only interesting to her as a weather geek. Nothing that will help her get home. Which sucks. But what can you do. She thinks she might pass on the results to a few select people anyway. Just in case.
Mindful of the date, she finally comes home just before the weekend, and if she's missing a couple of days from her memory after that, she just doesn't care. She's probably better off forgetting. So ignore that for now.
What matters more than that is her best friend has a birthday coming up.]

I know Vivi has a few friends in town and I don't know who they all are, so I thought I'd just make a general announcement. It's her birthday on the 2nd of February, and I'm going to take her up to the hot springs for the day. I'd really, really love it if any friends she has can come up for that day, too. She won't mention her birthday, so... you know. I can manage this much. She'd be pretty happy to see people there.
Bring food and drink and anything else you like?

Also, I'll be at Good Spirits tonight if anyone wants to catch up. Been a while.

[Sure enough, it's not long before Vivi joins her friend, a steaming mug of hot chocolate (complete with a shot of peppermint schnapps to give it a little extra warming power) in each hand.] Nami-san. [She slides into the booth across from Nami, placing one of the drinks in front of her and cupping her own mug with both hands, letting the warmth seep into her fingers.] I thought you might like one too.

Was it very uncomfortable out by the barrier? [Admittedly, there were a few chilly nights when she would've brought out some extra blankets to her friend if she could--the thought had definitely been there, but it wasn't a practical one, since she had no idea exactly where along the barrier Nami was, and, without Biri, had no efficient way to get there even if she had known.]

Mmm. [And then a faint, lazy smile as she continues on with her eyes closed.] Had to fight for space with Biri sometimes, though. Bratty duck.

[Even if her bed here is a lot smaller than the one back home, which makes it a little challenging to share with an oversize duck. After being apart from him for so long, though, Vivi couldn't bear to make him sleep on the floor.]

Did you end up finding anything out? [Obviously nothing really useful, since if that were the case, Nami would clearly not be cooling her heels at the bar, but maybe there was something...]

The barrier doesn't stop everything. [That's a good start.] It just...stops everything that we have any kind of influence over. It's keyed to us and everything we do, but not the natural way of things.

[She raises a hand to tap the back of her neck. It probably can't be that simple, but she knows the barcodes are one way the Malnosso track them.]

It's like-- [She glances across the table and picks up a coaster.] If I flick this coaster at the barrier, it'll bounce right off. But if, say, a gust of wind snatched it up off the ground and blew it at the barrier, it would go through. And not my gusts of wind, at that. [Because there's a difference there again.]

I wish I understood these things better. It might be useful to know, though. [Even if she can't quite figure out how.]
