These? Banana bread. Once the pans cool a little bit I'm giving them a wipe-down and putting in my newest attempt at meatloaf.

[He has a look at the protein dispenser, turning it this way and that.]

For you, though . . .? I'm thinking chicken patties, mashed potatoes, and vegetable fritters. Basic comfort food. Plus first shot at the banana bread, of course.

['Newest attempt at meatloaf' sounds like a fun experiment given the ingredients to hand. She grins.]

That all sounds pretty amazing, honestly. We used to have a cook on our ship, but he went home soon after I got here.

[Quality food has been low on the ground.]

Seriously? My ship has - you know, I think we might have three, now.

[Fortunately, food safety has seemed to be pretty easy with protein paste. Unfortunately, the act of extruding and kneading together chicken patties from the right combination of textures probably looks kind of disgusting.]

This fleet really needs better human resources people.

Either that, or you really need to convert your kitchen into a paying restaurant. [Nami is very carefully not paying attention to what he's doing with the food. It'll taste better that way, as far as she's concerned.]

You could make a killing. Of course, I'd expect a discount for coming up with the idea.

Have you met Clay? He'd never let us charge.

[The patties actually look right once they've been pressed in breadcrumbs, and he puts them to the side as he starts the potatoes and whips together the batter for the fritters]

Besides, everyone knows the bartender always gets a discount.

[She brightens.] Clay's your captain? He's a friend of mine! I didn't know. He's gonna teach me how to read star charts.

[...man, that food really is starting to look appetising. Way better than the fare on her own ship.]

But you're right, I can't see him allowing that. Maybe I should just come eat here from now on. [Innocently.]

Hey, go for it. I'm sure it would drum up some interest. [Eugene has absolutely zero problems with that idea. On the contrary, he gives an encouraging flash of a grin over his shoulder.] Though I guess if you're on the ship for star chart reading lessons you can always swing by the galley for something.

See, I always knew I made friends with the right people. [But she smiles more warmly, anyway. She appreciates the offer.]

Were you a cook at home, too?

A journalist, actually.

[He raises his voice over the sudden hiss of the oil as he spoons in the fritters to deep-fry, then lays the patties on the hot griddle that takes up half of his range.]

But I did a lot of food journalism, and that's a lot of studying the whys and hows of what goes into the food that people like. Toss in the knowledge upgrade they give us on how to actually do stuff, and I guess you get a pretty decent cook.

Food journalism...? [She hasn't run into many journalists that aren't specifically trying to take a photo for a bounty poster, but she's aware they exist.] Restaurant critic...? Or finding the best recipes, or...

Yeah, all of that. Restaurants, trends, food and drink culture in general . . . whatever people were talking about, I guess. I did a little bit of other stuff, but it was mostly food.

Sounds like an interesting job. I think you'd get on well with our chef. [Grin.]

Our ship's cook from home, that is. I didn't really get an appreciation for good food until he came on board.

Really. I guess I never associated being a ship's cook with fine dining.

[He sits down as well while he waits for the food to finish cooking, on a scavenged barstool he mostly keeps closer to the serving counter.]

Then again, if he's still going by chef I'm gonna guess he's pretty serious about his job.

He grew up in the field. When we found him he was working in a restaurant ship and had been for most of his life. [Not a ship restaurant, the other way round and all that entails] He takes his craft very seriously.

My captain asked him to join us, so he did. And he's amazing.

[She actually doesn't know the full story behind Sanji joining the crew. She wasn't there at the time, having kinda... stolen a ship and run away. Whoops.]

Hah. Sounds like you lucked out. How did a born-and-raised chef take to hanging around with a bunch of pirates?

Pretty well, actually. He's used to serving pirates. He's used to beating up pirates. It all works out.

Man. Food service with the option of beating up your customers. Talk about living the dream.

What, you don't get to beat people up where you're from? I'm sure we can find you some jerks on fleet somewhere.
