Yes, Miss Raine was telling me about it.

[He had asked her, as a favor, to see all the entries on the line locked from the Malnosso. And to tell him about the early years of Luceti.

So much history buried in the journals... so much that might be useful now... a reexamination might yield new perspective.

Can't forward without looking back.

... but... those with living memory of the beginning are almost gone. He can't help but feel that pieces of the puzzle are being stolen.]

It's as it says. You can either receive some sort of token for your service or you can bank points with the Malnosso to buy more exclusive rewards. [He's banking.] The more dangerous or skill requiring the mission, the more points you gather or nicer the item you receive.

Can't pool points, can't give them away, or receive them from someone else. [Now that would have been like money, wouldn't it? Though there's nothing to say you can't exhort another person who has enough points to spend them on something more personally beneficial.] Only choice you have is whether you use them or not and when. They ask you what you want at the end of your mission.

They show up as a balance at the back of your journal.

Yeah... I do. At fifty points you can get a bracelet that can cancel out shifts for one use. Doesn't always work I'm told, and they're a one shot deal. Reason why they're so cheap on the scale is that they have some defects.

Sixty, it's the Barcode-Be-Gone patch, or in other words a fancy sticker that blocks the Malnosso from tracking you via droid, or so they say. Doesn't work all the time either... and if you keep using it, its effectiveness dwindles down to nothing quickly enough. [He leans forward slightly, voice dropping.] I also believe they have some way to override the damn things, or they wouldn't give them out so freely. It would be troublesome if one of their volunteers used one out in the field and all.

Eighty... they'll actually do a shift for you. Just on things like houses and possessions... and this one seems like a more permanent deal. It's either an Auto-Repair shift, where whatever you choose will be repaired if destroyed... just like the houses. Or an Applied one... where they'll modify something like a house more to your liking.

[Just like you read, Miss Nami.]

Fourty. Guard duty, medical assistance, and outright combat missions are the highest rated right now. Each of my missions was worth twenty points.

That's what it was for me. But depending on what the Malnosso require, a type of mission can be anywhere from a few days to over a month.

[Silence and a long moment of considering.

Then he drains his glass and refills it.]

When I said they made sure to let a guy know they were watching, I meant it. One of the nurses and I tested it out... we got a response from the guards very quickly.

I got to know my fellow volunteers very well the first couple of days. One of them was a nurse, my age, Mao. If you ever run into her, you'll know her by her by the full body suit of tattoos she has. Been in this world ten years.

Anyway, Mao and I spent a lot of what free time we had together. We made it seem like we were having a whirlwind romantic fling... an excuse for us to be in each other's company as much as we were. Got a lot of rude comments for it too... so were at least some of the Malnosso buying it when it counted? I think so.

And naturally a couple is going to eventually want some time alone...

[Pause here for a sip of scotch.]

[Discomfort so noted, but Law gives no indication he registered it in the first place. Courtesy. Instead he trains his gaze on his drink.]

Mao and I both knew going into it that we were going to be caught. The Malnosso don't forbid volunteers from fraternizing, or even having a relationship on their own time... such as it is. No rules broken there. We weren't trying to escape. We didn't enter any restricted areas or wards... a closet wasn't worth more to them than a warning.

And honestly we didn't even make it far down the hall before they started closing. We made it seem we were too wrapped up in each other to notice. They for their part, gave us a few moments in the closet before they burst in. For that extra bit of humiliation.

We didn't touch or threaten them. They didn't touch her. For the most part they seemed somewhat glad someone had finally tried something. I suppose everyone had been too well behaved for their liking and they were itching to display a little authority. And disappointed that the misbehavior had only been a couple trying for a little privacy. So we got warned and humiliated... fully dressed down, and the Malnosso doctors and nurses joined in... since all the nastiest tasks started coming our way. There was a little less tension for the others, thankfully, after that. Some of the others were close to snapping.

[Over the top, yes, but it was expected and it could have been so much worse. The Malnosso doctors and nurses were just being petty and that being yelled at and humiliated was bearable in the grand scheme of things. Nobody had wanted them there after all, and the volunteers were considered a burden on the best of days in an environment that was less than pleasant.]

Not right now, no. They're far too vigilant and I don't see them becoming complacent any time soon.

You're welcome. Glad I could be of help.

[He sips his drink. Wonders if she is going to ask him the question that she addressed the network with earlier, or if she'll leave things as they are and excuse herself.

Either is possible; she clearly has a lot on her mind tonight. And he certainly has a better idea of where things lie on that front, though the picture certainly isn't perfect by any means.]

[Excusing herself then. Aa. Alright.]

Have a good walk back. [Windy out today... but otherwise clear and pleasant. And perhaps by now the gusts have died down.] And if you do decide to go for it, I hope it works out.

[A perfect picture isn't needed. Is it.]

[Well...

there's

a

question.

And he remembers what Katara once told him.]

... Miss Sayo?

[It is quiet. He appears very deep in thought about this.]
