[Nami's had quite enough of sleeping. It's kind of disconcerting to be told it's now September, and it doesn't help that she's spent the time since Ling's rude wake-up call still sleeping most of her day away. So tired, all the time. Prone to falling asleep mid-shower, and that is annoying, to say the least.

Oh, well. A week has gone past and she can finally get through most of the day with no problems, so Nami takes advantage of the fact that there is no Chopper to tell her otherwise (and no Katara or Law at the house at the time) to sneak up to the orchard and see how it's fared in her near-two-month absence.

...huh. Been hot lately, she sees. And a lot less mikan up here than she was expecting. Nothing too alarming, and the place seems okay otherwise, pinwheels and all. Someone even fixed her cottage door, lookit that.

Welp. Observant villagers might see the low-lying rainclouds to the northeast of the village, a tiny little storm that barely covers an acre. It's too hot today anyway, may as well take advantage of the fact that she can cheat.]

Hooooh, I can see that. But the world I'm from tends to tun on law-- law for this, law for that, superficial law here, and everyone's subject to it. Unless you have money, you know.

Well, we have laws. Probably the universal kinds of laws against crime, that kind of thing. But most more civil-based laws are set by the individual countries, I think. I imagine one about underage drinking exists somewhere.

World laws exist? Seriously? Wow.

We have a World Government. [There's a flatness in there that says she doesn't think much of it.] Something like six hundred countries fly their flag.

Six hun-- holy shit. I think our UN's only got like two hundred or something and they can't agree on anything.

I'm not sure how ours manage it, actually. Never really paid that much attention.

Though many of our countries are tiny island nations, so they just go with the flow or go under the radar. And I think honestly most still follow their own rules and customs and just kind of ...match up with the World Government's laws where they can. In return, the World Government is meant to protect them from pirates and external threats, that kind of thing. [She wrinkles her nose.] You know, when they're not too busy letting all that power go to their heads. The way I see it, pirates like us tend to do more rescuing than the marines do. We've been the honoured guests of royalty who have in turn sheltered us from the law when it's come calling. That should tell you how messed up it is.

Eeesh, that is pretty odious all around. [One more long sip and that's the can for him. He crouches to pet Linda briefly as she is working on the end of the mikan too]

Heh. When I was a kid I really believed in the marines and thought all pirates were monsters. You know, the standard riff. But I certainly don't regret becoming a pirate now.

Anyway, deep subjects and all. I'll try this with alcohol and tell you what I think.

Once or twice. It's never been a big staple of my diet, being as how back home so much of my diet is "what can I buy at the convenience store today?"
